Some of the most interesting cities in the world worth visiting

All the cities on earth are special, but some of them are so unusual that you won't believe they really exist. Here's a look at some of the strangest cities in the world worth a visit if you get the chance ...

Alien City

In 1947, a UFO landed near the town of Roswell in New Mexico. There was a great deal of debate about what the facility was about, but Roswell nevertheless became known as an Alien City. The site hosts alien themed festivals and even the local McDonald's is decorated as alien saucer.

City on the high seas

Neft Daslari or "Oil Rocks" is an industrial city in Azerbaijan. It is located on metal platforms on the high seas above oil fields. The city has no permanent residents. About 2,000 people come to work here in shifts over several months.

City in the rock

The town of Sentil de las Bodegas in Spain attracts tourists from all over the world because it is built on a huge basalt rock. There are streets here where you can see stones above your heads instead of the sky. They seem to fall off at any moment, but they are actually safe because they haven't changed their position for centuries.

A city where the dead are more numerous than the living

There are 17 cemeteries in the town of Colma, California. The death toll is more than 1,000. This happened because authorities had once decided to move the cemetery from San Francisco and all the bodies were buried here. The city's population was made up of gravediggers, florists and tile makers, but in the 1980s people from other professions began to move. Today's motto of the city is: "It's great to be alive in Colma!"

The last free city

Slab City is a California city populated by homeless people, retirees and people who have nowhere to go. Here people live in trailers and shacks without water, electricity and addresses. There are also no public institutions and no taxes and rents. All of this may sound awkward to you, but people who visit the site say it is a very comfortable town. Citizens call their city "America's last free city."

Cave town

Matmata in southern Tunisia is a city where barbaric underground dwellings are still populated. Houses were built on the surface in the 1970s, but many residents prefer to live in their traditional homes. Fans of the movie Star Wars will recognize this place as the home of Luke Skywalker.

A city under one roof

The entire city of Whittier in Alaska is housed in a 14-story building that used to be a military institution. There are shops, a police station, a hospital and a church. The goal was to save on heating because the weather is very cold and windy for almost a whole year. The city has a population of only 220.
